How to Set Up Trezor Safe 5

A step-by-step Trezor Safe 5 setup guide using Trezor's own button labels: seal check, firmware, authenticity check, 20-word backup, PIN, and the settings worth changing afterwards.

A Trezor Safe 5 will cost you $129 at the time of writing (September 2026). Setup is where you either protect that money or quietly undermine it. Trezor puts the whole job at roughly 15 minutes, which we’d call fair as long as nothing surprises you.

You’ll need three things to follow along: the sealed box, the USB-C cable inside it, and either a computer running Trezor Suite or an Android phone with a USB-C port. Give yourself a quiet half hour. Every button label here is lifted from Trezor’s own guide, so what’s on your screen should read the same.

What to Have Ready Before You Open the Box

Collect it all first. Hunting for a pen while 20 words sit on the screen is exactly how people end up with a bad backup.

  • A Trezor Safe 5 bought from the Trezor Shop, or else from an official reseller. Trezor calls its own shop the best place to buy one, and we agree, because a device that spent time in a stranger’s hands is the one thing you can’t audit afterwards.
  • The USB-C to USB-C cable that came in the box. There’s no Bluetooth on this model, so that cable is your only route in.
  • A computer for the Trezor Suite desktop app, or an Android phone with USB-C. On iOS the app will track your portfolio and let you buy and receive, but signing anything else means reaching for a desktop or Android device.
  • Both 20-word backup cards, plus the pen. They’re in the box already, sitting next to the start-up guide and a sheet of stickers.
  • A room with the door shut. Nobody should be reading the screen over your shoulder, and no camera should be pointed at the desk.
  • A PIN you’ve already decided on, somewhere between 4 and 50 digits. Improvising under pressure is how people end up with four digits in a row.

One warning before any crypto moves. Send to the wrong address or over the wrong network and that money is gone, because nobody can reverse a blockchain transaction: not Trezor, not the exchange you sent from, and not you.

Setting Up a Trezor Safe 5, Step by Step

Eight steps, in order. We’ve taken the labels straight from Trezor’s official setup guide, and the Android flow follows the same path with slightly different wording.

Step 1. Look at the Box Before the Device

Start with the packaging. Trezor’s line is that the holographic seal should be clean, firmly attached, and free from tears or residue. Peel it and you’ll see a “VOID” residue left behind on the device, which is meant to happen.

Where people slip up is talking themselves into a box that looks resealed. If anything about the packaging or the seal looks off when it arrives, Trezor’s advice is to contact its support team before you go any further.

Step 2. Get Trezor Suite on Your Computer

Head to trezor.io/start and hit “Download for desktop”. Install, then launch it. Android users grab Trezor Suite from the app store and can switch on biometric security when it’s offered.

The thing to watch for is a counterfeit wallet app, and there are convincing ones out there. Type the address into your browser rather than clicking a search ad, and glance at the publisher before anything installs.

Step 3. Plug In and Load the Firmware

Suite opens on a screen reading “Connect & unlock your Trezor”. Connect the Safe 5 with the USB-C cable. When the security check shows up, click “Set up my Trezor”.

Your Safe 5 turns up with no firmware at all, and that’s deliberate: nothing is preinstalled that you didn’t put there yourself. Suite gives you “Standard” or “Bitcoin-only”. Choose, click “Install firmware”, and the device reboots on its own once it’s done.

Plenty of people take a blank device as a sign it’s broken. It isn’t. You can load either firmware type onto any Safe 5 later on, so nothing here locks you in.

Step 4. Let the Chips Prove the Device Is Real

Up next is the “Secure Element authenticity check”. Hit “Start” and do what the device screen asks. Both chips join in on a hardware-level check that says whether your Trezor is genuine and unmodified.

The chip behind it is an OPTIGA Trust M (V3), certified to Common Criteria EAL6+, and it holds a certificate from Trezor that helps prove the device is the real thing. Suite will then offer the “Know your Trezor” tutorial, which you’re free to skip.

Skipping the check itself to save half a minute is a choice we’d argue with. It’s the only point where the hardware tells you that the thing in your hand came from Trezor.

Step 5. Make the Wallet and Copy Out 20 Words

Pick “Create a new wallet”. The other button, “Recover”, is for bringing back a wallet from a backup you already hold. Suite defaults to “Single-share Backup”, which means 20 words.

Click “Create wallet”, then press and hold to accept the Terms of Use. Copy all 20 words onto the card in the order they appear, stepping through with the arrows. The device then quizzes you on particular words, which is its way of checking you wrote them down instead of nodding along.

Trezor doesn’t soften this one: “Never enter your backup anywhere other than directly on your Trezor device.” Those words are your only route back into the wallet. Paper or metal, offline, nowhere else.

Photographing the words, or dropping them into a password manager, is the classic error here. If it touches a network, it’s the wrong home for a backup, however convenient that feels at the time.

Step 6. Pick a PIN You Won’t Forget

Anything from 4 to 50 digits works here. You tap it out on the Safe 5’s own touchscreen, and because the digit grid reshuffles after every attempt, nobody learns your PIN from watching your finger.

Steer clear of number runs and anything personal. Get it wrong 16 times and the secure element wipes its secret, resetting the device and taking the wallet with it. Trezor says the PIN can go on the backup card, provided that card stays private and offline.

A rushed 4-digit PIN, gone from memory a month later, is depressingly common. Nothing resets it. You’d be wiping the device and rebuilding from those 20 words.

Step 7. Switch On the Coins You Hold

That’s setup done. Desktop drops you straight onto the dashboard, and on mobile you tap “Go to Dashboard”. From there you turn on whichever assets you’re holding.

Bitcoin, Ethereum and Solana are all covered by the universal firmware, and Trezor lists thousands of coins and tokens in total. Individual chains get switched on and off under Networks in the settings.

A coin that looks missing is usually just a network you haven’t enabled. Check Networks first, before you write the asset off as unsupported.

Step 8. Try a Small Amount Before the Rest

Open the account you’re funding, tap Receive, and hold the address in Suite up against the one on the Trezor’s screen. They have to match. That single comparison is what defeats malware that quietly swaps addresses on your computer.

Move a small amount across, let it land, then send the rest. Trezor states plainly that it can’t shield you from malware already sitting on your machine, and that is precisely why the little screen gets the final say.

Settings We’d Change Once You’re In

Trezor’s defaults are fine. Still, a handful of settings are worth opening once the wallet exists, and they all sit under Settings in Trezor Suite, on either the Application or the Device tab.

Two of them deserve a second thought. Lose a passphrase and it is gone: it cannot be removed or reset, and Trezor Support has no way to bring it back, so write it on paper before you put anything into that wallet.

Multi-share is the other one. Confirm the new shares actually work before you destroy the single-share backup, because Trezor’s own warning is that a compromised original leaves the funds exposed anyway.

How Much Time Should You Set Aside?

Fifteen minutes is Trezor’s number, and it holds up when Suite is already installed and there’s a pen within reach. Downloading and installing Suite adds a few more. Firmware costs you another minute or two.

Then there’s the 20-word backup, which is slow by design. Writing the words out, arrowing back through them, and answering the device’s spot checks is the one place where hurrying costs you the most.

What happens after that is down to the chain rather than the Trezor. A test transfer on a fast network shows up within minutes, while Bitcoin drags when blocks are full.

When Something Goes Wrong

  • Suite can’t find your device. See whether the screen lights up on plugging in, then swap the USB-C cable and try another port.
  • The screen lights but nothing follows. Plenty of USB cables carry power and no data, and a lit screen tells you nothing about yours, so borrow one you have used for file transfers.
  • You’re running through a hub or a dock. Plug the Trezor directly into the computer instead.
  • Windows won’t recognize it. Trezor points at Zadig, which installs generic USB drivers like WinUSB, libusb-win32 and libusbK, and Device Manager will tell you whether the device shows up at all.
  • On a Mac, work through the Apple menu, About This Mac, More Info, System Report, Hardware, then USB, and see whether the Trezor is listed.
  • Something is blocking the connection: a VPN, a firewall rule, an antivirus setting, or a browser extension. AdBlock and Privacy Badger are the two Trezor names. Switch them off, or add Trezor Suite to the allowlist.
  • The web version is playing up. Another browser or an incognito window rules out extensions, and resetting Suite to its defaults is the next move.
  • The PIN has gone. Nothing resets it, so wipe the device and rebuild it from your backup.
  • Firmware won’t update from an iPhone. Trezor doesn’t support that over iOS, so switch to a computer or an Android phone.
  • Nothing at all works on this machine. Before you call the device faulty, try it on a different computer, ideally on another operating system.

Habits That Keep Your Coins Safe

  • Test with a small amount before any real balance moves, and wait until it lands.
  • Check every receiving address on the Trezor’s own screen instead of the browser. That display is the one thing malware can’t rewrite.
  • Take addresses from the Receive screen and never from your history. Address poisoning works by planting a lookalike address there for you to copy.
  • Those 20 words never get typed into a computer or a phone. Device, paper, metal.
  • Once you’ve written them down, run “Check wallet backup” in Suite, so a slip of the pen turns up now instead of in the middle of a real recovery.
  • Keep the backup somewhere fire and water can’t get to. Trezor sells its Keep Metal for exactly this, and makes the point that ink fades.
  • Give each transaction a fresh address. Everything on a blockchain is public, and reusing one address ties your activity together.

How long does setting up a Trezor Safe 5 take?

Roughly 15 minutes, which is Trezor’s own figure. Tack on a few more if Trezor Suite still needs downloading. Writing out the 20 words eats most of that time, and it is the part we would never rush.

Can I set up a Trezor Safe 5 without a computer?

Only with an Android phone that has USB-C. The iOS version of Trezor Suite handles portfolio tracking, buying and receiving and little else, so signing anything further, or updating firmware, sends you back to a desktop or Android device.

Why is there no firmware on a new Trezor Safe 5?

Deliberate. Trezor Suite installs it while you set the device up, and you pick either Standard or Bitcoin-only. Neither choice sticks, because you can load the other type onto any Safe 5 afterwards.

I have forgotten my Trezor Safe 5 PIN. Now what?

Nothing resets it. Sixteen wrong attempts and the secure element destroys its secret, the device resets, and the wallet goes with it. From there you rebuild the wallet on the device using your 20-word backup.

Single-share or Multi-share Backup, which should I use?

Single-share, for most people. It is the default, and it is 20 words on one card. Multi-share carves the backup into 1 to 16 shares with a threshold, which earns its keep if you want those shares kept in different places. Check that a Multi-share Backup works before you get rid of the original.

Is a Trezor Safe 5 more secure than a Trezor Safe 3?

No. Trezor’s position is that the two share a secure element chip and give your funds the same level of protection. What the Safe 5 buys you is a color touchscreen, haptic feedback and Gorilla Glass 3.

Does a Trezor Safe 5 need a passphrase?

Not at all, it is optional. Adding one spins up a separate hidden wallet from the same backup, using up to 50 ASCII characters, with capitals mattering. Trezor cannot recover it for you, so we would only bother if you are sure you can store it properly.
