Coinbase Wallet doesn’t go by that name anymore. It’s the Base app, the classic wallet shuts down on August 15, 2026, and your keys still sit on your own device where Coinbase can’t reach them.
Who’s it for? Anyone already keeping money on Coinbase who wants somewhere the exchange doesn’t control.
The people it fails are holders of Dogecoin, Litecoin, XRP or tokens on smaller chains, because the Base app won’t show those networks at all.
We’ll go through what the app has turned into, how its two modes differ, what you’ll pay, what it holds, and how to get set up without losing anything along the way. Every number below comes from Coinbase’s own help center or its blog.

So What Is Coinbase Wallet Now?
Coinbase builds it, and Coinbase is the listed US exchange you’ve heard of. The product now answers to the name Base app. Its help center puts the definition simply: a Base wallet holds the private keys directly on your mobile device rather than with a centralized exchange like Coinbase.
Don’t confuse it with the Coinbase app itself. No Coinbase account is required, and signing up needs neither an email address nor a bank account.
None of this is new, either. Back on August 15, 2018 Coinbase said its Toshi app would become Coinbase Wallet, and Toshi had shipped roughly a year before that carrying what Coinbase called the world’s first mobile dapp browser.

The Coinbase Wallet Features That Matter
- Two modes share one app. Base mode runs on smart wallets and is the newer of the pair, while legacy Coinbase Wallet mode is what long-time users remember. Tap your profile photo to open the wallet switcher and flip between them.
- Base mode will let you in with an email address, a Google account, an Apple account, or a recovery phrase you already own. Keeping the seed phrase out of the first five minutes lowers the wall that stops plenty of beginners cold.
- Swapping inside the app works on Base, BNB, Ethereum, Avalanche, Polygon, Optimism, Arbitrum and Solana. Coinbase puts the house cut at up to 1% on swaps, and the DEX aggregator takes its own slice on top.
- There’s a social feed built on the Farcaster protocol living inside your wallet. Posting means holding a Farcaster account, and English is the only language the feed handles for now.
- Third-party developers write mini apps for shopping, music and games that open without leaving Coinbase Wallet, and a full browser hides behind the magnifying glass. You get one mini app open at a time, no more.
- Park at least $1 USDC in the app and USDC rewards start accruing daily, paid out weekly. Coinbase reserves the right to move that rate whenever it wants.
Is Coinbase Wallet Easy Enough for a Beginner?
Getting started is painless. Download the Base app, choose how you want to sign in, follow the prompts. Because email, Google and Apple sign-in all work, nobody has to copy twelve words onto paper before they’re allowed to look around.
There’s a catch buried in that convenience. A passkey sign-in hands you a smart wallet, while a 12-word recovery phrase hands you a traditional one, and the two don’t behave the same. Coinbase burns a lot of help-center wording on explaining which sort you ended up with, which we read as a sign that people get confused.

Once you’re in, it holds up well. Buying runs as a short sequence: Wallet tab, then Buy, then payment method, asset, amount, and a swipe to confirm. Trading follows the same rhythm, with a gear icon tucked under Fees if slippage tolerance needs changing.
Friction shows up anyway. Base mode leaves Solana and Bitcoin switched off, so you tap Enable Now on the home screen and then Enable Now again to confirm each one. Bitcoin swaps still aren’t there.
Chrome and Brave are the only browsers the extension supports. Safari and Firefox are on the wish list with no date attached, which annoys us more than it probably should. Exporting your transaction history isn’t possible either.
How Safe Is Coinbase Wallet in Practice?
Nothing exotic here, and that’s fine. Coinbase wrote in 2018 that the device’s Secure Enclave and biometric authentication protect the private keys. A 12-word recovery phrase comes out of the app, and Coinbase states flatly that it will never ask for those words and has no access to them.
Protection like that cuts both ways. Misplace the phrase and the wallet is gone, with nobody at Coinbase able to do a thing. Because blockchain transactions can’t be reversed, crypto sent to a wrong address stays sent, which is why Coinbase tells you to fire off a small test amount first.
Backups are handled better here than we expected. An encrypted copy of the recovery phrase can go into iCloud or Google Drive behind a password only you know. Forget that password and you’re locked out regardless, so keep a written copy too.
Passkeys come with Base accounts, unlocked by biometrics or your device PIN. Sign in by email and you get a 6-digit code that dies after 10 minutes, while the session it opens lasts 30 days. Creating a recovery phrase for a smart wallet writes to the chain, so expect a network fee, once for every chain you touch.
Transparency lands somewhere in the middle. GitHub carries the smart wallet contracts under the MIT license, audits folder and all, and the wallet SDK is MIT as well. What you install on your phone isn’t published, so auditing the client is off the table.
One incident deserves a mention, though it left the wallet untouched. Coinbase disclosed on May 15, 2025 that criminals had paid overseas support agents to copy customer data belonging to less than 1% of monthly transacting users. According to that disclosure the thieves got no private keys, no credentials and no 2FA codes, and reached neither hot nor cold wallets.
A $20 million ransom was demanded, Coinbase said no, and the company put the same sum into a reward fund. All of that sat on the exchange side rather than in the self-custody app. We’d call that distinction the whole argument for running both.
What Coins Can You Keep in Coinbase Wallet?
Ethereum and EVM-compatible networks, Solana and Bitcoin all work in either mode. Preconfigured, you get Arbitrum, Avalanche C-Chain, Base, Bitcoin, BNB Chain, Ethereum, Optimism, Polygon, Solana and Zora. Coinbase counts the supported assets as thousands, every ERC-20 token and stablecoins such as USDC included, without ever publishing a headline figure.
What’s missing tells you more than what’s there.
When the classic wallet shuts on August 15, 2026, twenty-one named networks fail to make the trip.
- Dogecoin and Litecoin survive in legacy mode alone, and Base mode drops them.
- Bitcoin Cash, Ethereum Classic, Stellar and XRP have already gone. Coinbase cut those four in January 2023, blaming low usage.
- Blast, Celo, Core DAO, Flare, Fantom Opera, Gnosis, NEAR, Plasma, Ronin, Sei, Sonic, Story, Unichain, VeChain and zkSync Era have no place in the Base app.
- Custom networks you set up yourself vanish with the rest.
Nobody loses money over this. Coinbase spells out that balances stay exactly as they were and the app simply quits displaying those networks, with the same addresses sitting underneath. Since a recovery phrase works indefinitely, importing it into a different wallet can wait until you feel like doing it.
Expect less from NFTs than you’d assume. Only Ethereum and Polygon NFTs in image or GIF format appear, while OpenSea lazy-minted ERC-1155 tokens and certain off-chain NFTs don’t. Worth remembering too: BTC and DOGE sit at different addresses from your main EVM one, which catches people out when they go hunting for their Coinbase Wallet address.
What Using Coinbase Wallet Costs
Downloading it costs nothing at the time of writing (September 2026), whether that’s iOS, Android, the web or the Chrome Web Store. Nothing to subscribe to, no device to order.
Trading is where the meter starts. Base takes a fee of up to 1% on swaps by Coinbase’s own account, the DEX aggregators routing your order can keep a slice of their own, and that slice shows up as a smaller amount of the token you asked for. Sitting on top of all that are network fees, which belong to the chain.
Shifting crypto between your Coinbase account and the Base app runs on-chain, so standard network fees apply. Same company, still a blockchain transaction, still a bill. Our guide to transferring crypto from Coinbase to Coinbase Wallet covers the steps.
Some of that money can come back to you. Referrals hand you 25% of the net swap fees your referred wallets throw off while the person you referred gets a 10% discount on swap fees, payouts land every Friday, and the cap is 100,000 USDC per referrer. Keeping at least $1 USDC in the app earns USDC rewards that build daily and pay weekly.
Rewards arrive with strings. Americans need a linked Coinbase account, and everyone else has to attest they aren’t in the US. Treat the income as potentially taxable, and expect a Form 1099-MISC in the US once earnings clear the reporting threshold.
Grab the app from official pages only: the App Store, Google Play, the Chrome Web Store or coinbase.com. A self-custody wallet has no support desk that can undo a theft, so the download source deserves two seconds of care.
Coinbase Wallet Pros and Cons
Here’s the bargain.
A well-built self-custody wallet with a real, listed company standing behind it, wired into a major US exchange, bought at the price of a swap fee, a client you can’t inspect, and a network list Coinbase trims whenever the roadmap says so.
Setting Up Coinbase Wallet, Step by Step
- Pull the Base app from the App Store or Google Play, or add the extension from the Chrome Web Store. Start from the official Coinbase downloads page instead of trusting a search result.
- Launch it and choose how you’ll sign in. Email, Google accounts, Apple accounts and importing an existing recovery phrase are all supported. Email or a passkey leaves you with a smart wallet, while twelve words leave you with a traditional one.
- Save your recovery phrase before any money arrives. Go to the Assets tab, tap Settings, pick the wallet, type your passcode, tap Allow, then take either Back up with iCloud/Google Drive or the manual route.
- Copy the twelve words onto paper as well. No photographs, no typing them into websites, and nothing shared with anyone who claims to work in support. Coinbase warns that keys.coinbase.com is the only place a recovery phrase belongs. Whoever holds those words holds your money.
- Switch on whichever networks you actually need. Inside Base mode, hit Enable Now for SOL or BTC on the home screen, then Enable Now once more to confirm. A few moments later they show up in your portfolio.
- Test with a small amount before anything else. Choose the right network, read the address twice, send a few dollars, wait for it to land. The wrong network or the wrong address means the funds are gone, and nobody, Coinbase very much included, can reverse it.
- Want hardware in front of it? Use the extension: pick I already have a wallet, then Connect Ledger wallet, then Connect now, and approve on the Ledger while the Ethereum app is open. Blind signing has to be enabled for DEX swaps.
If Coinbase Wallet Isn’t For You
MetaMask
For EVM DeFi, MetaMask remains the default, and its dapp ecosystem runs deeper. Coinbase publishes instructions for switching from MetaMask to Base using the secret recovery phrase, which says plenty about who it’s chasing. The differences get proper treatment in our MetaMask vs Coinbase Wallet comparison.
Exodus
Desktop, mobile and a browser extension are all covered by Exodus, it pairs with Ledger and Trezor, and the company says it adds no transaction fees of its own beyond what the network charges. It trades on the NYSE as EXOD and has been going since 2015. The whole story sits in our Exodus wallet review.
A Hardware Wallet Instead
When losing the balance would genuinely hurt, another app isn’t the answer. Something like the Ledger Nano X gets the keys off your phone completely, and the Base extension can still drive it. Where each option fits is laid out in our guide to the best non-custodial wallets.
Coinbase Wallet FAQ
Is Coinbase Wallet safe to use?
Mostly. Its safety tracks your phone and your recovery phrase, since the keys live on the device and Coinbase can’t see your 12-word phrase. That means it can neither move your funds nor recover them for you. The client isn’t open source, and for some people that alone rules it out.
Is Coinbase Wallet the same thing as Coinbase?
No. The exchange is custodial and looks after your private keys for you, while the Base app is self-custody and leaves those keys on your device. You can use it without a Coinbase account.
What does Coinbase Wallet cost to use?
Downloading costs nothing. Coinbase puts the Base swap fee at up to 1%, DEX aggregators can add a fee of their own, and network fees hit every on-chain transaction, transfers between Coinbase and the Base app included.
What happens to my Dogecoin or XRP after August 15, 2026?
Nothing. Coinbase says the balances and addresses don’t change and the Base app merely stops showing those networks, so spending them means importing your 12-word recovery phrase into a wallet that still supports the chain.
Can I pair Coinbase Wallet with a Ledger?
Yes, but only in the browser extension. Choose I already have a wallet, then Connect Ledger wallet, and approve it on the device with the Ethereum app open. Up to 3 wallets can be added, one of them a Ledger with as many as 15 addresses, and blind signing has to be on for DEX swaps.
Does Coinbase Wallet run on a desktop?
It does. A web app exists alongside a Chrome and Brave extension. Safari and Firefox are things Coinbase says it hopes to support later. Smart wallet accounts don’t work in the extension.
How do Base mode and legacy mode differ?
Base mode is the newer build, running on smart wallets, with cheaper network fees on Base plus the social feed and mini apps. Legacy mode is the old Coinbase Wallet and the only place Dogecoin and Litecoin still appear. Your profile photo opens the wallet switcher that moves you between them.
Our Verdict on Coinbase Wallet
Say yes if your money already sits at Coinbase, your transactions happen mostly on Ethereum, Base or Solana, and you’d like the keys in your own hands without swallowing a dictionary first. Between the sign-in options and the encrypted cloud backup, self-custody becomes survivable for people who would otherwise leave the lot on an exchange, and the difference between custodial and non-custodial storage is worth grasping before you commit.
Walk away if Dogecoin, Litecoin, XRP or anything on a smaller chain makes up your holdings, since August 15, 2026 removes them. We’d also think twice if closed-source software bothers you, or if cheap swaps are the priority, and our roundup of the best mobile crypto wallets lists what else is out there. Our one-line verdict: a solid self-custody wallet for people already in the Coinbase orbit, so long as you confirm your coins made it through the move.
